Outpatient Detox and Virtual Withdrawal Management

Virtual Withdrawal Management

Kolmac is careful about screening our outpatient detoxification patients. It can be done safely virtually.

Most people when they think about withdrawal management, they think about going to an inpatient setting. Kolmac was doing ambulatory detox. By that I mean outpatient detoxification even before the pandemic. We do that because, one, we are very careful about carefully screening our patients. We don’t take unnecessary risks or take on patients that may be more complicated to manage. If we have any doubt that this can’t be possible either at home, we at that point stop and say, “You need to really go to an inpatient setting.”

But for many patients, I would say more than half the patients, this can be safely done virtually. They get assessments more than what they might get in an inpatient setting. For instance, a nurse may call them every hour on the first two days of their withdrawal management treatment. So, we keep assessing them every hour, keep giving them medications and bring them safely from a point where they’re withdrawing to the point where they can safely attend an intensive outpatient program sometimes the very same day or the very next day. And that’s what starts their recovery journey at Kolmac.
